Why most mobile apps fail the 90-day test

The apps that survive their first three months share a small set of habits. The ones that don't, fall into a familiar pattern. Here's how to tell which you've got.

Most apps don't fail at launch

They fail at day 90, when the launch buzz wears off and the team has to decide whether the app is genuinely earning its place in users' lives. The apps that survive this test almost always have the same five traits.

1. A small daily value

The best-performing apps don't ask for ten minutes a day; they ask for thirty seconds, repeated. Streaks, glanceable widgets, well-placed notifications, the right kind of friction.

2. Onboarding that earns the right to ask for things

Permissions, sign-up, even simple data entry. All should be earned by demonstrating value first.

3. Push notifications that are useful, not desperate

Every desperate notification is a one-way ticket to the dock.

4. Performance as a feature

Cold-start time, scroll smoothness, and offline robustness are not technical concerns. They're the difference between an app that gets opened and one that gets uninstalled.

5. A clear evolution roadmap

Apps that don't visibly evolve get reviewed as if they've stopped working.

If your app is approaching its 90-day test and any of these are missing, we can help.
